Panthers Fight Wire-to-Wire Before Olympians Edge Ahead 31-21
The Chaffey College football team struck early and battled throughout but came up short in a 31-21 road loss to San Diego Mesa College on Saturday night in National Division Southern League play. The Panthers delivered a resilient performance before Mesa's second-half surge proved decisive.
Chaffey opened the scoring on its second drive of the game, powering through 86 yards in seven plays capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Francisco Villalbazo to wide receiver Theodore Edquilang. Kicker Mustafa Hnyin added the extra point to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. After Mesa responded to tie the game, Chaffey regained momentum late in the half. Quarterback Evan Powell orchestrated a 12-play, 81-yard drive, connecting with William Harper on a six-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 14-14 heading into halftime.
San Diego Mesa capitalized on its first two possessions of the third quarter, using a long scoring drive and a 70-yard punt return touchdown to build a 28-14 advantage. Chaffey answered early in the fourth, when Powell broke through the middle for a 14-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the deficit to 28-21. A late Mesa field goal extended the lead, and the Panthers' comeback attempt stalled in the final minutes.
Powell finished with 207 passing yards and one touchdown while adding another on the ground. Villalbazo contributed 51 yards passing and one touchdown. Nathan Enriquez led all receivers with 64 yards on five catches, followed by Brennan White with 59 yards and Justin Benson with 58 yards. Edquilang and Harper each found the end zone once. Running back Hakim Halliburton paced the ground attack with 31 yards on seven carries.
On defense, Donovan Brown led the Panthers with 12 tackles, while Baridilo Sika and Sivaj Dejurnett-Simmons each recorded a sack. Defensive linemen Taylor Chapple-Love and defensive back Zyhaire Lewis added key stops to limit Mesa's rushing attack in critical moments.
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, hosting Palomar College in their final home game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Grigsby Field.
