Panthers Battle to the Final Buzzer in Narrow Loss to Oxnard
The Chaffey College men's basketball team returned to the Sports Center on Tuesday evening, falling 87-83 to Oxnard College in a fast-paced matchup defined by perimeter shooting, transition play, and long scoring runs on both sides. Despite a strong push in the final minutes, the result marked the Panthers' third straight loss.
Chaffey opened the game with crisp ball movement and balanced scoring, shooting 50 percent from the field and knocking down four first-half threes to build a 47-41 halftime lead. Brian Smith, Colin Ingram and Deisyn Payne set the tone early with aggressive drives and interior scoring, while Avery Garcia and Logan Jereczek helped stabilize the offense through their playmaking and perimeter touches.
Oxnard shifted the momentum in the second half behind hot three-point shooting and improved rebounding, finishing 13-for-33 from beyond the arc. The Condors outscored Chaffey 46-36 after halftime, capitalizing on transition opportunities and closing key possessions with late-clock threes. Chaffey remained within striking distance throughout the final minutes, but Oxnard answered each run with timely perimeter baskets to maintain control.
Payne led the Panthers with 16 points on 7-for-15 shooting, adding two rebounds, one assist and a steal in a strong all-around performance. Garcia followed with 12 points, a team-high 12 assists and 6 steals, along with five rebounds while guiding the offense through extended stretches. Ingram posted 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds, providing consistent interior production. Jereczek contributed nine points, including one three, along with six rebounds. Kajuan Thomas also grabbed eight rebounds and nine points in 24 minutes of action.
As a team, Chaffey shot 45.3 percent from the field, was 7-for-8 at the free throw line and secured 42 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass. The Panthers generated 22 points off turnovers, 46 points in the paint, and 35 bench points, but Oxnard countered with 39.4 percent three-point shooting, 26 assists and a late scoring burst that ultimately decided the outcome.
The Panthers will now turn their attention to Thursday's matchup against Imperial Valley College, set for Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. in the Sports Center.
