Panthers Build Momentum With Win Against Cerro Coso
The Chaffey College men's basketball team earned an important Inland Empire Athletic Conference (IEAC) victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Cerro Coso College 72-60 at the Sports Center. Behind efficient shooting, interior control and balanced contributions across the lineup, the Panthers secured a key conference win and built momentum heading into the new year.
Chaffey set the tone early with strong ball movement and physical play inside, establishing control through the opening half. The Panthers shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first half and knocked down seven three-pointers, building a 39-32 halftime lead behind consistent perimeter execution and interior scoring.
The Panthers maintained their composure in the second half, responding to the Coyotes' attempts to close the gap with timely baskets and disciplined execution on both ends of the floor. Chaffey limited Cerro Coso to a 42.1 shooting percentage after halftime while continuing to protect the paint and force difficult possessions. Balanced scoring and defensive pressure allowed the Panthers to preserve the lead down the stretch and secure the win.
Gozie Ejike led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points, adding three assists and two rebounds while providing steady interior production throughout the contest. Kajuan Thomas followed with 14 points, a team-high nine rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Avery Garcia added 13 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and six steals, delivering consistent two-way production on the backcourt. Kameron Gardner anchored the offense with a team-high eight assists. Colin Ingram scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Semaj Morrison rounded out the scoring off the bench with eight points and an assist.
As a team, Chaffey shot 50 percent from the field, outscored Cerro Coso 32-22 in the paint, forced 29 turnovers and generated 26 points off those opportunities. The Panthers also received timely production from the bench with 17 points and limited the Coyotes to 40.5 percent shooting overall, closing out the contest with disciplined execution on both ends of the floor.
The Panthers, 1-2 in the IEAC, will now turn their attention to their next conference matchup, traveling to face Palo Verde College on Friday, Jan. 3, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
