The Chaffey College men's soccer team hosted Santa Monica College on Friday afternoon but came up short in a 2-0 result. Despite creating chances throughout the match, the Panthers couldn't find the finishing touch, while the Corsairs capitalized with a goal in each half.
Santa Monica opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, finishing off a counterattack to take the lead. The Panthers pressed forward through Victor Ramos and Diego Garcia, testing Santa Monica's defense with quick combinations in the final third, but were unable to level the match before halftime.
The Corsairs doubled their advantage in the 64th minute, forcing Chaffey to push higher up the field. Julio Martinez and Kevin Velasquez both registered shots on target, and Adrien Vazquez nearly converted off a set-piece delivery, but the Panthers were denied by strong goalkeeping and narrow misses.
Goalkeepers Fernando Monteon and Christian Hernandez kept Chaffey in contention. Monteon recorded three saves, and Hernandez logged two saves. The Panthers' back line tightened after the second goal and limited Santa Monica's chances in the closing stretch.
The Panthers (4-1-1) will regroup at home on Tuesday, September 16, when they host Rio Hondo College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
