The Chaffey College men's water polo team competed in four matches at the Cuesta College Tournament over the weekend, earning an opening-round win and showing continued development against a competitive slate of opponents. Baron Gonzalez and Vincent Garibay led the Panthers offensively, combining for multiple goals across the weekend.
Chaffey opened the tournament on Friday with a commanding 15-3 win over Las Positas College. The Panthers built a 5-1 first quarter lead behind goals from Gonzalez, Parker Black, Garibay, Gabriel Zarate Ayala, and Mario Nikolovski, then extended their advantage to 8-1 by halftime. Wendell McIntosh, Black, Gonzalez, and Evan Fleming each added scores in the second quarter as Chaffey maintained control throughout the match. Goalkeepers Nolan Hanson and Adam Kirkpatrick combined for 18 saves, and Gonzalez led all scorers with four goals and three assists.
In their second match of the day, the Panthers fell 19-7 to San Diego Mesa College. The team found offensive rhythm in the later quarters, converting on power plays and showing improved passing movement through the front court. Garibay led the team with three goals, while Black contributed two goals, one during a power play. Nikolovski added one goal, and Gonzalez distributed several assists.
On Saturday, Chaffey was defeated by Saddleback College 21-8. Garibay recorded five goals to lead the scoring effort, while McIntosh, Jonathan Lopez, and Zarate Ayala each added one. The Panthers started fast with two early goals but were unable to sustain momentum against Saddleback's attack.
In the final game, Chaffey delivered a strong closing performance despite falling 12-9 to Cabrillo College. After trailing early, the Panthers regrouped in the second half and outscored Cabrillo 6-2 behind goals from Gonzalez, Garibay, Black, and Nikolovski. Gonzalez finished with two goals and three assists, while Goalkeepers Kirkpatrick and Hanson combined for 12 saves in the cage.
The Panthers will next compete at the Crafton Hills Tournament on Friday, Oct. 25. They will play against Grossmont College at 10:30am before facing Crafton Hills College at 12 p.m.
