Panthers Surge Past Victor Valley in 71–58 Victory
The Chaffey College Women's Basketball team delivered a commanding road performance February 7, defeating the Victor Valley Rams 71–58 at Victor Valley College. A strong opening quarter and efficient perimeter shooting propelled Chaffey to the 13-point victory.
Chaffey set the tone early, outscoring Victor Valley 24–15 in the first quarter. The Panthers maintained control through halftime with a 37–29 lead and withstood a third-quarter push from the Rams before pulling away in the final period, closing the game on a 20–10 fourth-quarter advantage.
The Panthers were highly efficient offensively, shooting 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field and an impressive 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from three-point range.
Sophomore guard Cali Azcuenaga led all scorers with 24 points, knocking down 6-of-9 from beyond the arc to spark the Panthers' perimeter attack.
Guard Niyah Thomas contributed 15 points, attacking the rim and converting 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. Forward Abby Hardy added 10 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting effort, while AeriLynn Young delivered a strong all-around performance with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Turnovers also played a key role. Chaffey committed 21 turnovers, but Victor Valley managed only nine assists on the afternoon and shot 35.3 percent from three-point range (6-of-17), limiting their comeback attempts.
The decisive stretch came in the fourth quarter, when the Panthers tightened defensively and capitalized on transition opportunities.
With the victory, Chaffey continues to build momentum in conference play. If the Panthers maintain this level of shooting and defensive rebounding discipline, they will remain a formidable contender in the weeks ahead.
