The Chaffey College women's soccer team came up short against Santa Barbara City College, dropping a 2-1 contest on Friday. The Panthers fought to the final whistle and created chances late but could not erase a two-goal deficit.
The Vaqueros opened the scoring in the 15th minute. After regrouping, the Panthers tightened up defensively and generated a pair of opportunities, but the Vaqueros held their lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Vaqueros doubled its advantage in the 60th minute and converted on a setup. Chaffey responded by pushing higher up the pitch with Emelyn Montes-Bueso, Alexa Pereida, Jaelyn Hamlett, and Analysa Huerta applying pressure through the midfield to create more possessions in the attacking third.
The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute when Karina Parchment drew a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Peredia calmly buried the attempt to cut the deficit to 2-1. Despite a late surge of chances, the Panthers could not find the equalizer.
Goalkeeper Isabella Ortiz kept Chaffey in the match with nine saves, showing composure under pressure. The back line, Tegan Garcia, Emma Guardron, Sofia Guerrero, and Chloe Rodriguez, held the Vaqueros scoreless over the final 30 minutes and gave the Panthers opportunities to rally late.
The Panthers will next host Southwestern College on Tuesday, September 9, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
